Claude Code vs Figma MCP: what’s the difference, and do you need both?

By Attuna · · 4 min read

Claude Code and Figma MCP aren’t alternatives. Claude Code is an AI coding agent: it reads your codebase, writes and edits code and runs commands. Figma MCP is a server that gives an agent like Claude Code access to Figma: the layout, variables and components of a frame, and on the remote server the ability to write back to the canvas. One does the work; the other supplies design context for it. Whether you need both depends on whether your designs live in Figma.

What each one is

Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic coding tool. It runs in a terminal, an IDE, the desktop app or the browser, works inside a repository, and can read files, edit them, run your dev server and check the result. On its own it knows your code, whatever you paste or describe, and what it can see in a browser if you give it one.

Figma MCP

The Figma MCP server is Figma’s implementation of the Model Context Protocol. Figma says it “gives AI agents the design context they need to generate code from your Figma files”. It isn’t an agent and doesn’t write your code. It answers questions an agent asks, through tools such as:

  • get_design_context: design context and code for a selected layer.
  • get_variable_defs: the variables and styles a selection uses.
  • get_screenshot: an image of the selection.
  • get_metadata: a lightweight outline of a large selection.
  • use_figma and generate_figma_design: remote-only tools that write to the canvas.

The full list is in Figma’s tools and prompts reference. Figma lists many supported clients besides Claude Code, including Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Gemini CLI.

Side by side

  • What it is: Claude Code is an agent. Figma MCP is a context source an agent connects to.
  • Who acts: Claude Code decides what to do. Figma MCP only responds when called.
  • What it knows: Claude Code knows your repository. Figma MCP knows a Figma file.
  • Output: Claude Code produces code and commands. Figma MCP returns design data, images and, when writing, layers in Figma.
  • Without the other: Claude Code still builds UI from prompts, screenshots and code. Figma MCP needs some MCP client to be useful at all.
  • Cost and access: Claude Code needs a Claude plan or API access. Figma MCP needs a Figma account; the desktop server needs a Dev or Full seat on a paid plan, and writing outside drafts needs a Full seat.

What Claude Code does without Figma MCP

Plenty. Claude Code can build from a written brief, a pasted screenshot, a live page it opens in a browser, or the components already in your codebase. For many products, especially ones where design happens in code, that’s the whole workflow. The weakness is precision: from a screenshot, an agent estimates spacing and colour rather than reading them. Our guide to giving Claude Code visual design references covers how to make that estimation better.

What Figma MCP adds

  • Exact values: variables and styles instead of guesses from pixels.
  • Structure: auto layout, nesting and component instances, which map more cleanly to code.
  • Component mapping: with Code Connect, a Figma component can point to the component in your codebase, so the agent reuses it.
  • A way back: on the remote server, capturing a running page into Figma for review. See the Figma and Claude Code round trip.

Do you need both?

  • Designs live in Figma and you build them in code: yes. Figma MCP is the most reliable way to get exact values into Claude Code.
  • You design in code, or from references: no. Claude Code with good references, tokens and a browser check covers it.
  • You use a different agent: Figma MCP works with it too. The choice of agent and the choice of design source are separate.
  • You want designs generated in Figma: that’s the remote server’s write tools, driven by an agent such as Claude Code. Figma’s own Figma Make is another route that doesn’t involve a coding agent.

Using them together

Connect the server once, then point Claude Code at a specific frame rather than a whole file:

Terminal
claude plugin install figma@claude-plugins-official

# or add the remote server directly
claude mcp add --transport http figma https://mcp.figma.com/mcp
Prompt
Implement the settings page from this Figma frame: [frame link]
Use get_design_context and get_variable_defs for the frame.
Map Figma variables to our existing tokens in globals.css; don't add
new ones. Reuse components from src/components/ui before creating any.
Then open the page at 1440 and 390 and list differences from
get_screenshot.

The detail of setup, file preparation and prompting is in how to use Figma MCP with Claude Code.

What neither one holds

Figma MCP describes what a designer drew. Claude Code knows what the code does. Neither carries the judgement between them: why this density, which references the designer had in mind, what the next screen should feel like when nobody has drawn it. That gap shows whenever an agent extends a product beyond the frames it was given, and it’s why references and a design system do different jobs.

Attuna is built for that part. In Attuna, in private beta, a project holds a brief, its direction, rules to prefer or avoid, and annotated references. Claude Code reads it over MCP next to the Figma server, so the agent has both the drawing and the reasons.
